Quaker Parrot (Myiopsitta monachus)
Quakers have the cutest, cheekiest little face. Not a large bird, around 26-29cm in length and between 90-130gms in weight. Somewhere between a Cockatiel and a Sun Conure. The natural colour is a green body with a pale grey extending from the forehead down to the upper abdomen. The flight coverts and tail have a touch of blue. Quakers have a substantial orange hooked beak which adds to their appealing appearence. A blue mutation is readily available in Australia and mutations such as Cinnamon, Albino, Lutino among others are being developed overseas. Visual differences between male and female are zero therefore surgical or DNA sexing is required. Both sexes make an equally great pet making gender choice a personal one.
Quakers have a lovable, cuddly nature whilst a little mischevious. They have been listed as one of the best known talkers, right up there with the likes of the African Grey. It is for all the above reasons coupled with affordability, that the Quaker parrot is fast becoming a favourite amongst companion owners and breeders alike. Dietary requirements are similar to that of a conure, with a variety of pellets, seed and fresh fruit and veg readily accepted. For more information diet go to our "Diet" page. Quakers, although small in size will require the largest cage you can afford. They also require lots of toys to keep their active little brains occupied. We have information regarding cage, size, placement etc under "cage needs".
