These days there are so many handrearing formulas commercially available. We have tried and tested the majority over the years, and all work quite well. The difference between most being consistency and ease of mixing. Depending on what method you choose to feed your birds, may have an influence on what brand you prefer. With a spoon all work fine, however, some are too coarse to pass through a syringe.
Following is the homemade mix that we have used extensively, with great results. We have raised Lovebirds through to Eclectus and everything in between without a problem. It's on the coarse side and works best when using the good old bent spoon. It gives the blender a workout so borrow the next door neighbours!
Ingredients
The following ingredients are all used in equal parts by weight or volume...it's not that critical.
Here's a tip: All the dry ingredients blend easily. The peanuts are oily and tend to stick to the blade and sides. If you feed them in slowly with say...the Baby Cereal, this will help them mix up nice and fine without the sticking. Have them measured out and add a handful to each of the dry ingredients also works well. You get the idea .
