ROSEDALE AVIARIES

Green-cheeked Conure (Pyrrhura molinae molinae)

Where to start with these little champions? Heaps of fun! They are mostly green in colour with the upper breast feathers a pale brown, sometimes with a hint of green margined with a pale grey. The crown and nape are brown, the forehead reddish brown and the cheeks green (hence the name). Green-cheeked Conures have a rich dark brown eye with a periophthalmic ring of bare white skin. The visual difference between male and female is hard to determine, therefore, surgical or DNA sexing is required. There are quite a few colour mutations becoming available. We love our Green-cheeks and are very interested in breeding their mutations. We currently have Normals(obviously), Cinnamons, Yellow-sided and Pineapples. There is also a Blue mutation now available, unfortunately we don't have any . Lifespan is 18+ years.

Green-cheeks As Pets

Green-cheeked Conures make a fantastic pet for so many reasons. I'll start with their compact size. They measure around 26cm and weigh 70-90 grams. They have a sleek body type and are great flyers. This makes them a perfect candidate for someone in a small unit for example, or a hobbyist with limited aviary space. Green-cheeks have a very playful and inquisitive nature. They can be destructive and love to chew (so don't let them play on your antique furniture!).They are highly intelligent and very curious, making them ideal candidates for training. They love to explore and will spend hours amusing themselves and, as with all conures, need to be provided with a variety of toys. See our headings under "General" regarding cage requirements, placement and toys."Diet" will provide you with information regarding the Green-cheeked Conure menu.

Housing

Green-cheeked Conures are very active and love to fly. Our breeding pairs here at Rosedale are housed in suspended aviaries measuring 1200H x 600W x 2000L(mm). We incorporate a secure walkway at the rear with access to feed and water bowls as well as nestboxes. The rear of the aviary, including the walkway, is constructed of steel frame and colourbond. The roof sheeting covers approximately half of the cage. This allows shelter during inclement weather, but access to rain showers and sunshine. Conures can become aggressive during breeding so we use double wire between cages to avoid missing toes! We use a privacy screen between the cages under the sheltered end, as we find this helps with breeding. Natural wood toys are provided for our Green-cheeks, helping to alleviate boredom.

For information about feeding, please see our headings under "Diet". We also have information under "General" regarding: Cage Needs, Household Hazards, Parasites, etc.
