Fruit & Veg
There are so many different fruits and vegetables available that your birds will love. I try to provide as much variety as possible. Some items are on special as they go out of season or if there is an excess of supply. I keep an eye out for bargains as well as the good old favourites such as corn on the cob, apples and grapes. I will list as many as I can think of that are readily accepted by most birds.
Apple, apricot, banana (goes brown quick), blueberries, blackberries, beans, carrot, celery, capsicum, corn, chilli peppers, grapes, kiwifruit, mango, mulberries, nectarine, pear, passionfruit, peas, pineapple, peach, plums, pumpkin, rockmelon, raspberries, strawberries, sweet potato, squash...there are many more fruits and vegetables that are available when in season that can be offered.
Never feed avocado or rhubarb, these are poisonous to birds.
It all sounds good to buy your product fresh and spend an hour each morning before dawn cutting, slicing and dicing fruit and veg. Some breeders may scoff at this but...in the real world we all have other things to do. As much as I try and provide fresh products daily, I do keep a supply of frozen peas, corn, carrot and capsicum mix that I buy in large bags from a restaurant supplier. It's top shelf, individually quick frozen and if it's good enough for me, it will do my birds if I can't get to the shops for whatever reason. Note in the photo below, I have added some cooked brown and white rice, also a good source of nutrition. Soft foods are handy to add nutritional supplements. A light sprinkle of the supplement of your choice can be added and the birds will ingest this as they eat their fruits and veg. See our "Supplements" page for more info regarding the products we use and recommend.
